El Santo Padre y mi Superior, Obispo Bernard Fellay, han pedido que Yo reconsidere las declaraciones que hice en la televisión Sueca hace cuatro meses, porque sus consecuencias han sido muy duras.

Observando estas consecuencias puedo verdaderamente decir que siento haber hecho esas declaraciones, y que si hubiera sabido de antemano el daño y el dolor pleno que ellas originarían, especialmente a la Iglesia, pero también a los sobrevivientes y parientes de las victimas de injusticia bajo el Tercer Reich, no las hubiera hecho.

En la televisión Sueca dí sólo la opinión (... “Creo”...“Creo”...) de un no historiador, una opinión formada hace 20 años sobre la base de evidencia por entonces disponible y raramente expresada en público entonces. Sin embargo, los hechos de las recientes semanas y el consejo de miembros importantes de la Sociedad de San Pío X me han persuadido de mi responsabilidad por la mucha angustia causada. A todas las almas que se honestamente se escandalizaron de lo que dije, ante Dios pido perdón.

Como ha dicho el Santo Padre, cada acto de violencia injusta en contra de un hombre hiere a toda la humanidad.

The Holy Father and my Superior, Bishop Bernard Fellay, have requested that I reconsider the remarks I made on Swedish television four months ago, because their consequences have been so heavy.

Observing these consequences I can truthfully say that I regret having made such remarks, and that if I had known beforehand the full harm and hurt to which they would give rise, especially to the Church, but also to survivors and relatives of victims of injustice under the Third Reich, I would not have made them.

On Swedish television I gave only the opinion (..."I believe"..."I believe"...) of a non-historian, an opinion formed 20 years ago on the basis of evidence then available and rarely expressed in public since. However, the events of recent weeks and the advice of senior members of the Society of St. Pius X have persuaded me of my responsibility for much distress caused. To all souls that took honest scandal from what I saidbefore God I apologise.

As the Holy Father has said, every act of injust violence against one man hurts all mankind.
